Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D) is working to prevent New Yorkers from losing their pensions.

Schumer met with members of the New York State Teamsters Wednesday night to discuss a new piece of legislation.

The Teamsters Conference Pension Fund was supposed to pay an average of $5,000 per month for each retiree with 30-years of service.

However, 30 percent cuts were made to those benefits because of risky investments, which took a toll during the 2008 financial crisis.

Schumer says the Butch Lewis Act would help save the pension plan, though it could cost up to $15 billion.

"The people in these pension systems: A, pay their money in; B, did nothing wrong and are now paying an unfair price and all three of those mean we need to restore this," Schumer said.

Schumer says the 30-year-project is one of the top priorities on the agenda for Congressional Democrats.
