Donald Trump Jr. has hired an attorney after admitting he met during the presidential campaign with a Russian lawyer who offered damaging information about Hillary Clinton. Josh Robin filed the following report.

Moscow, 2013. Miss Venezuala is crowned Miss Universe.

Behind the curtain, the Trump family tended contacts that would figure into a far bigger prize.

Three years after the pageant, as Donald Trump got his party's nomination, his son was sitting down with a Russian lawyer he met through the beauty contest his family ran.

After first telling The New York Times they talked about adoption, Trump Jr. added the lawyer said she had damaging information about Russian connections to Hillary Clinton.

Citing three White House advisors and two others, the paper says Trump Jr. took the meeting to get dirt on Clinton.

This music publicist says he set up the June 9, 2016 meeting, including campaign chair Paul Manafort and Ivanka Trump's husband Jared Kushner, now a top White House aide.

The publicist, Rob Goldstone, works in a Chelsea office. We went up Monday, but he wasn't there, and he didn't return a call.

Goldstone tells the Associated Press he set up the meeting on behalf of a Russian singer/songwriter with deep ties to the Kremlin, a singer/songwriter who also would have been familiar to the Trump family.

Around the time of the pageant, Donald Trump starred in one of Emin Agalarov's music videos.

Also in 2013, Russian leader Vladimir Putin presented the singer's father, a developer, an award as one of Russia's outstanding citizens.

Trump Jr., who with his brother runs his father's company, sees nothing wrong in the meeting. He says he would talk with Senate investigators. But a good-government group is asking federal regulators to see if it's a campaign finance violation.

"Donald Trump Jr. went there with the intention of soliciting campaign contributions, and that broadly defined includes in-kind contributions, opposition research, really any information that would potentially affect the U.S. election," said Aaron Scherb of Common Cause.

As for the pageant, it may pose troubles now, but the president had high hopes.

A few months before, he tweeted, "Do you think Putin will be going to the Miss Universe Pageant in November in Moscow. If so, will he become by new best friend."
