Senator Charles Schumer slams the Trump administration for its plan to slash funding for a key drug prevention program.

Under Trump, the Office of National Drug Control policy could lose 95 percent of its budget.

The White House released a memo Friday putting the new figure at $24 million, down from 388 million.

Schumer says the opioid crisis would be a lot worse in New York if it were not for the same program Trump wants to de-fund, and called this the latest example of Trump not keeping his promises.

"Almost all the drugs used in New York that kill our kids come from outside — whether outside the United States or across the borders," Schumer said. "To eliminate this program is folly. And the President's talked about how he wants to get rid of drugs. The President's talked about how the drug scourge should be dealt with."

A White House spokeswoman downplayed these proposed changes, and called the opioid epidemic a top priority for Trump.

Schumer also pushed for a new bill calling for more border agents and resources to stop the flow of opioids, like fentanyl, from entering the country.
