A late-night, nonsensical tweet by President Donald Trump took the Internet by storm Wednesday, even as the White House faces major policy decisions and a continuing swirl of controversy. All this comes as Hillary Clinton takes on a new and more vocal role. Bobby Cuza reports.
It's a decision with literally Earth-changing consequences: whether to quit the Paris climate agreement.
President Trump says a decision is coming.
"You're going to find out very soon," he told reporters.
But multiple reports said Trump has decided to pull out of the deal signed in 2015, when all but two countries in the world agreed to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The others were Syria and Nicaragua.
The news drew a sharp rebuke from European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who said the U.S. can't simply withdraw immediately and that Trump "doesn’t know the details."
Another forceful critic has emerged.
"What's really stupid about it is, they're throwing out the economic opportunities," said former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
In a freewheeling talk at a tech conference Wednesday, Clinton pointed to numerous factors in her loss: the email scandal she called a nothingburger, the October James Comey letter, voter suppression, a poor DNC data operation, misogyny and Russia, hinting at collusion with Trump aides and generally teeing off on the president.
"The president is a very impulsive, reactive personality. So if we all like Paris—the Paris agreement—he may decide to get out of it, not even understanding one bit about what that means," she said.
Meanwhile, former FBI Director James Comey will now reportedly testify as early as next week before the Senate Intelligence Committee, his first public remarks since he was fired earlier this month.
And on Twitter, a nonsensical message late Tuesday night - Trump ended it by criticizing "constant negative press covfefe" - sparked an online sensation.
The White House press secretary, incredibly, defended the tweet.
"I think the president and a small group of people know exactly what he meant," Sean Spicer said.
"Covfefe. Trending worldwide. Maybe for a minute, you'll forget the latest accusations," Clinton said. "It's the circus. Right? It's what a classic authoritarian does."
