ALBANY, N.Y. -- A group of Democrats in the state Senate are working to strengthen New York's gun laws.

One of the measures in their proposed package of bills would prevent people who have committed hate crimes or have a history of domestic violence from owning guns.

Another proposal would allow families of shooting victims to sue gun makers.

The lawmakers face an uphill battle in the state senate, though.

Republican lawmakers have worked to roll back parts of the SAFE Act since the law was first enacted in 2013.
