Mayor Bill de Blasio ramped up his re-election efforts at a fundraiser with a prominent LGBT activist.

The mayor was joined by Edie Windsor for the event in Lower Manhattan. She's known for her role in a landmark Supreme Court decision that took down the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Another participant told NY1 the mayor's pledge to stand with New Yorkers in the wake of Donald Trump's election win has re-energized his campaign.

"I have to say, on behalf of the LGBT community especially, people are very, very concerned, frightened, and it's just been really amazing to see our mayor step up and to be very clear that New York City is a sanctuary, it's a safe place for all of us," said de Blasio supporter Yetta Kurland. "The thing that we cherish so much about New York City is the diversity in this city."

The mayor does not have any official challengers yet.
