With his police commissioner by his side, Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday ratcheted up his feud with Governor Andrew Cuomo, calling on him to support a bill that he says would help protect police on the street. NY1's Courtney Gross filed the following report.

The governor and the mayor rarely see things eye to eye. On Tuesday afternoon, tinted car windows seemed to be the latest thing to separate them.

"This is about protecting our police officers," said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Two cars with blacked-out windows served as the backdrop for the mayor and his police commissioner. They're urging Governor Andrew Cuomo to sign legislation to require the tint on car windows to be checked when a vehicle gets its annual inspection.

According to state law, windows cannot block more than 30 percent of light. The legislation would mean vehicles fail inspection if their tint is too dark.

The mayor invoked the murder of police officer Russel Timoshenko back in 2007. He was fatally shot after approaching a stolen SUV with tinted windows.

The theory goes that an officer would approach a vehicle with tinted windows during a routine traffic stop, and he or she wouldn't know the potential dangers lurking behind the door.

This proposal has been before the governor before, back in 2012. He vetoed it.

"I have not spoken to the governor. I look forward to," de Blasio said. "Obviously, he has until Monday at midnight. We have been in regular contact with his staff."

Just an hour after the mayor's press conference, the governor's office released a statement.

"We always intended to sign this legislation and would have been glad to tell the city if they'd just asked us - no need to grandstand," the statement read.

An administration official said the governor had a change of heart after the increased attacks on law enforcement officers this year.

Of course, the mayor's office still tried to get the last word, saying, "Nearly five years and one veto later, we're glad the governor is ready to protect our police by taking illegal vehicles off the street."

It looks like the door is closed on at least one fight for now.
