Incumbent Gustavo Rivera won the Democratic primary for the 33rd State Senate District Tuesday.

Rivera beat challenger Councilman Fernando Cabrera after a contentious race.

Rivera accused Cabrera of trying to shake down Bronx developers to benefit a non-profit associated with his church and criticized him for his stance on LGBT issues.

In 2014, video surfaced of Cabrera praising the openly homophobic Ugandan government.

While, Cabrera claimed Rivera hasn't done enough for his constituents since taking office in 2011.

The 33rd district represents areas of the Bronx including Kingsbridge, Tremont and Fordham.
