City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito has agreed to pay thousands of dollars in fines as part of a settlement over free services she received from a lobbying and consulting firm.

The case with the city's Conflicts of Interest Board centers around Viverito's efforts to become Speaker in 2013.

Investigators say she improperly received services from The Advance Group, which included work from staffers as well as a flyer that was prepared and distributed in support of her candidacy.

The Board ruled that any services should have been paid for.

Viverito is being fined $7,000 and will also have to reimburse The Advance Group nearly $4,000.

Advance Group President Scott Levenson is also being fined $4,000.
