As part of his preliminary budget speech at City Hall on Thursday, Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to announce an increase in funding for security in major parks across the five boroughs.
The mayor's plan would boost overall park security spending about $20 million annually.
The money would allow the city to hire 67 full-time Parks Enforcement patrol staffers, and 50 seasonal part-timers, who would largely be sent to New York's most frequently-visited parks.
De Blasio is also slated to announce the expansion of a crime-fighting tool known as ShotSpotter, which uses sensors to detect gunfire, to cover 60 square miles cross all five boroughs.
The pilot program generated nearly 1,700 gunfire alerts. In nearly three-quarters of those cases, no one had called 911 to report shots being fired.
