The 2007 film "Waitress" is now a Broadway-bound musical. NY1’s Frank DiLella recently took a trip up to Cambridge, Massachusetts to check out the world premiere, which features a score by a well-known recording artist. He filed the following report.

She has been serving the pop charts hit songs since 2007. Now, singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles is marking new territory and bringing her love of music, theater and even pie - yes pie - to the stage.

The artist is the musical voice behind the new show "Waitress," based on the 2007 film of the same name. The world premiere is currently playing at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

"I grew up on musical theater. Those were the first records I ever listened to were cast recordings, shows like ‘Miss Saigon’ and ‘Les Miz,’ and ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘Sound of Music’ and ‘Annie’ - all of these shows that kind of informed the way I heard music," Bareilles says.

The show tells the story of Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker who is stuck in an abusive marriage. Tony winner for "Pippin" and American Repertory Theater Artistic Director Diane Paulus - is at the helm of "Waitress."

"The key for this whole project was who could capture this tone? And the whole project unlocked when we found Sara Bareilles to do this," Paulus says.

Actress Jessie Mueller, who earned a Tony for singing Carole King in "Beautiful," is now doing Bareilles music as the central character in "Waitress."

"She's so open, and she's just been such a wonderful person to be around too. I find that interesting because I found that to be with Carole," Mueller says.

In addition, with all this talk of music, it goes hand in hand with all the pies that are concocted in the show - and that is on stage and off.

Whether you're a lover of pie, Sara Bareilles or just plain musical theater, "Waitress" is playing at A.R.T. in Cambridge through the end of September, and the show will open on Broadway in the spring.
