The spring season is about to heat up on Broadway with shows gearing up for their bows. NY1’s Frank DiLella filed this preview of the new musical "Something Rotten!"

It is the 16th century all over again, but this time with a modern musical twist. Welcome to the world of "Something Rotten!"

This new show tells the tale of a pair of brothers struggling to write a hit play, living in the shadow of William Shakespeare. That is until a soothsayer presents them with their future, something that they are going to create.

Who better to direct this new work than song and dance man turned Tony-winning director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw?

“It’s totally original, so it’s been a blast coming up with what should happen, what the story should be,  and everything, so it’s been really exciting,” says Nicholaw.

“Something Rotten!" features a score by Broadway newcomers and real life brothers Karey Kikrpatrick and Wayne Kirkpatrick.

The musical is chock full of some familiar Broadway faces - Christian Borle plays Shakespeare and Brian d'Arcy James and John Cariani play the Bottom Brothers.

“Our Bard is a bit of a fraud. We are playing him as a rock star, so I'm playing him like Mick Jagger and Prince,” says Borle.

“It's about going out on a limb, it's about creating, it's an homage to musicals - and it's a great night at the theater,” says d'Arcy James.

Considering that "Something Rotten!" is a true valentine to the musical stage,  we polled the company, asking them to share their favorite musical, and why.

“’Dreamgirls,’” says Nicholaw.

“The first one that pops into my mind – ‘Floyd Collins’," says d'Arcy James.

“There are so many – ‘Sunday in the Park with George’,” says Heidi Blickenstaff, who is also in the musical.

However, the  crowd favorite was “Sweeney Todd.”

To see if "Something Rotten!" becomes your personal favorite musical, you catch the show at The St. James Theatre starting on March 23.
