Alberto Pimienta joined the Spectrum News and Local Programming group in April of 2016 as a political reporter in the Washington, D.C. bureau.
Alberto covers the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court and major political stories coming out of the nation’s capital.
Alberto arrived at Spectrum News in the heat of the 2016 presidential election. During the year, Alberto reported on the candidacy of President Donald Trump. He covered the Republican National Convention in Cleveland and the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. During election night, Alberto reported from Donald Trump’s headquarters in Midtown Manhattan. He then covered Trump’s presidential inauguration in January of 2017.
While Alberto’s daily reporting duties mainly concentrate on political stories, in 2016 he was also on the frontlines of some of the biggest breaking news stories of the year, including the terrorist attack at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida and the violent protests in Charlotte, North Carolina after the fatal police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott.
Prior to joining the Spectrum News and Local Programming group’s Washington D.C. bureau, Alberto was a reporter for the Voice of America. There he covered the nation’s capital various political beats including the White House, Congress, State Department, the Pentagon, the Justice Department and the Supreme Court. In 2013, Alberto traveled to the Netherlands to cover the 3rd Nuclear Security Summit and the first G7 gathering after Russia’s expulsion from the G8 due to its invasion of Crimea. Every year, he also covered the United Nations’ General Assembly.
At Voice of America, Alberto constantly found himself reporting on breaking news stories around the country including spending a month in Ferguson, Missouri covering the violent protests after the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown; the Baltimore riots after the death of Freddie Gray; protests in Chicago after a local police officer shot 17-year-old Laquan McDonald and the Navy Yard shooting.
Alberto ended his coverage of the 2012 presidential election from Mitt Romney’s election night campaign headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts. He then covered President Barack Obama’s second inauguration in January 2013.
Alberto is fluent in English and Spanish and is conversational in French. He is the first and only reporter in the Spectrum News and Local Programming group to also report in Spanish.
Alberto calls Maracaibo, Venezuela home but has spent time in Spain and Panama as well.
He is an honors and magna cum laude graduate from Ball State University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in News Broadcasting and Journalism.
