One nonprofit in Harlem scored a big boost from a young Manhattan resident and a couple of hockey giants. It's a power play hoping to create more athletic and educational opportunities for those in need. And for that, they're our New Yorkers of the Week. NY1's John Schiumo filed the following report.

In hockey, an assist is a great play that leads to a score. On this day in Harlem, 12-year-old Dylan Gallagher picks up a big assist.

“Since my bar mitzvah is coming up, I wanted to do something that helps for the community and I just love hockey a lot," Gallagher said.

That something is passing on joy to other young New Yorkers.

Dylan is collecting and donating sports gear to the non-profit “Ice Hockey in Harlem."

It offers free hockey clinics at Central Park’s Lasker Rink as well as academic programs off the ice.

“Hockey is not a sport that is traditional in the Harlem community or communities of color. Since 1987, they’ve done so much to really just break barriers," said John Sanful, Executive Director at Ice Hockey in Harlem.

This month, Dylan’s idea picked up speed. The New York Rangers got wind. Hockey equipment manufacturer CCM did too.

And on Dylan’s behalf, the Canadian company donated $20,000 worth of brand new skates, helmets, and sticks to the group.

“When CCM heard about that, we thought, wow, what a wonderful thing that really is emblematic of the CCM assist program," CCM rep. Sandra Carreon-John said.

"I feel great because I like the equipment and stuff," player Olivia Morrison said.

“I actually feel so happy and excited to try out my new gear," player Jaysean Erby said.

"Ice Hockey In Harlem" mentors more than 200 kids.

The new gear will help in the short term. However, the achievements by all those on this rink will last a lifetime.

“No one encouraged him to do it. He just came up with all by himself and so obviously he has a real giving heart and during this season of the holidays what a better time to be doing what he’s doing," said Ron Duguay, a former New York Ranger.

"I wanted to give back to the community and just to make sure these kids have smiles on their faces," Gallagher said.

They do. That's why Dylan, Ice Hockey In Harlem, and CCM, the three stars of this game, are our New Yorkers of the Week.
