Our latest New Yorker of the Week is a one-man band who's been instrumental in providing comfort to those undergoing cancer treatment. NY1's John Schiumo introduces us.

Charlie Allenson bills his performance as "Bad Jokes and Classic Rock."

But it's so much more than that.

Charlie's concerts are for patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. His message of hope and healing resonates with each serenade.

"I've had people come up to me when I'm done and they say, 'You know, I really could barely get out of bed now. The music has just helped me so much. I feel so much more energy now and feel happier than I did an hour ago,'" Charlie said.

"I can only take from that, that music does something beyond just listening to it," he added.

The concerts started ten years ago after the Bronx native walked by the hospital. What he witnessed struck a chord.

"I saw these patients standing outside with their IV poles, trying to take in the sun, trying to do something. It just looked wrong," Charlie said. "They looked alone and there was no family member with them, and I think that's where I thought that I could probably do something."

He's been doing that something ever since.

Charlie plays everything from The Beatles to Bruce Springsteen to Prince. The music lifts spirits and provides comfort.

"For two hours now I've just been in a place of listening to his music, and I haven't thought at all about what I'm going through or why I'm here, and that's a really nice thing and it's a real gift," patient Laura Middleton said.

"Music is really a healing art form, which patients really appreciate," said Kameil Grant-Knight, the patient recreation center manager at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

"We often find that we get a lot of patients here when Charlie's here, because he has real presence," Grant-Knight continued. "He has a warm heart."

Sometimes his performances last a couple of hours; no breaks, and no complaints.

"It's about finding that little glimmer inside you no matter how bad things get and hanging on to that, and that will get you through," Charlie said.

And so for sharing the power of music as medicine, Charlie Allenson is our New Yorker of the Week.
