On her own time and free of charge, our New Yorker of the Week helps families living in a Brooklyn shelter by making their day a little sweeter. NY1's John Schiumo introduces us.

When Mary Gomez bakes, she mixes sugary ingredients with extra kindness and care.

"I want to use the talent that I have in baking and the passion that I have for something that's productive and good," said Mary Gomez, the New Yorker of the Week.

It’s a family recipe the Brooklyn native shares with New Yorkers in need.

"There's people out there that have no homes and have no food," Mary says as she bakes. "I can't go to sleep knowing that there's a lot of people that are hungry."

So, Mary feeds her hunger to help by baking for those without a home — free of charge. It’s something that the 25-year-old has been doing since she was 15.

Mary is inspired by her mother.

“I would always watch her and seeing her give back to people that were less fortunate," Mary said. "I feel like bringing my sweets to them is like bringing a little piece of home to them.”

"We put a lot of love and effort into it and it's a lot of fun," said Gabriella Sabino, 14, Mary's cousin. "I like to see the people's reactions when they eat our food, because it feels really good to know that you're giving back to others."

Every month, Mary and her cousins visit the Bay Family Center in Sheepshead Bay.

On this day, they delivered more than 100 homemade cookies and cupcakes.

"It makes us feel good that there's people out there that look at us and they know that we are in need and they come and support us," Jecenta Irizarry, who lives in the shelter, said.

"Cookies and cupcakes make me beyond happy," said seven-year-old Spencer Net, who also lives in the shelter.

And sometimes Mary delivers more than sweets; she has also cooked full dinners for families at the shelter at her expense.

Just another reminder that Mary is always thinking about someone else.

"It warms my heart and it brings little bit of happy tears because I feel like, you know, I'm making their day a little bit brighter," Mary said.

"I feel happy and special," Rickira Daley, 9, who lives in the shelter, said.

And so, for nourishing those in need with added sweetness, Mary Gomez is our New Yorker of the Week.
