As God's Love We Deliver celebrates its 30th birthday, the latest New Yorker of the Week makes sure each of its clients is remembered on their own special day. NY1's John Schiumo filed the following report.

You could say Chuck Piekarski was born to bake.

"My last name is Piekarski, which means of the baker," he says.

For Chuck, inspiring others along the way is the icing on the cake. He understands how a simple dessert prepared from scratch can nourish and hearten the most vulnerable in our city.

"A dessert is something special. It's something that we look forward to at the end of the meal, and something that gives us a little lift," he says. "I had a very, very close friend, one of the first people I knew with HIV/AIDS, who died of AIDS. I would try to cook for him, to feed him just to keep him alive. And when I found 'God's Love We Deliver,' it was what I wanted to do."

Chuck's been giving back for almost 25 years as a pastry chef at God's Love. The nonprofit cooks and delivers meals each day to New Yorkers living with a life-altering illness.  It's all free of charge.

On birthdays, Chuck makes sure his clients feel special.

"A little thing like a birthday cake can really raise your spirits, which really helps your immune system, which also helps you think that you're part of the community, that you're not forgotten," he says.

He whips up and decorates about 50 birthday cakes a week. The process takes Chuck a few hours and is filled with his personalized touch.

"He's got a heart of gold, and we're all so lucky to work with Chuck," says Emmett Findley, manager of communications with God's Love We Deliver. "Every dessert that goes out is baked with a lot of love. Every birthday cake that's got his handwriting on it comes from a place of love, and that's really unique."

Several times a year, this baker also delivers.

"It makes me feel good and know there are people that, they like you or they care about people that can't help themselves sometimes," says Viola Davis, a client with God's Love We Deliver. "It makes me feel good. It makes me jump up and holler. Woo!"

"It make me feel very strong, and I'm better," says Ana Serrano, a client with God's Love We Deliver.

So, for helping his fellow New Yorkers feel extra special and sweet, Chuck Piekarski is our New Yorker of the Week.
