A reoccurring high-pitched noise has become an unbearable annoyance for some Chelsea residents who turned to NY1 For You for help. NY1's Susan Jhun has the details.

The irritating noise, heard in the video above, is a nuisance that Chelsea resident Eric Weingartner claims has been plaguing him for close to two years now.

"It's high-pitched," Weingartner said. "It cuts through everything."

"It's just very distracting and piercing," complained Glenn Smith, another Chelsea resident.

The shrill noise has become unbearable, according to residents on 16th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues, who say it can be heard inside as well as out.

Residents said they never know when the noise will start or when it will end.

"It could go on several times during the day," Smith said. "It could come on any time, day or night. There are times when it's gone on for several hours and you begin to get a headache."

It is especially frustrating, since residents said the source of the sound is unknown.

Weingartner said he called 311 several times, and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) inspected.

NY1 contacted the department and found that the agency is looking into whether a local business is the source of the noise.

A spokesman said the company in question told the department that the equipment that may be causing the noise would be serviced last week, and that the DEP will send an inspector back out to see if there has been any improvement.

In the meantime, neighbors said they have had enough.

"It's affecting hundreds of us," Weingartner said. "I just definitely want peace and quiet."

NY1 will keep you updated on this disturbing situation.
