A huge area of standing water has some Staten Island residents swimming with concern. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following NY1 for You report.

What looks like a pond is actually a large pool of stagnant water standing at the corner of Escanaba and Lamoka Avenues on Staten Island.

"They paved the street, and water's been laying here since that time," said homeowner Joseph Salerno.

Three years ago, according to residents on the block, who say the pool is formed by rainwater that collects and never goes away.

The Salernos say the huge pool of water is a year-round hazard.

"The winter with the ice," said homeowner Valerie Salerno. "In the summer with the mosquitoes."

These homeowners say in the winter, the standing water freezes, creating a slipping hazard while taking away parking, and in the summer, it becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

"Nobody wants to do anything," Joseph Salerno said. "We tried DOT, DEP, Environmental Protection. We got letters, got cameras, everything. But nothing happens."

After the Salernos called us, NY1 for You contacted DOT and DEP. A city spokesperson told us the two agencies will work together to see what short-term measures can be taken to mitigate the street flooding in advance of a DEP sewer project that is currently scheduled for 2019.

Homeowners hope the short term measures will be taken, and soon, before the Summer months and mosquitoes return.

We will keep you updated.
