Maintenance issues at one NYCHA building in Brooklyn were making it hard for tenants to get their mail until they reached out to NY1 For You for help. Susan Jhun filed the following NY1 for You report.

Checking the mail has become a tremendous task for New York City Housing Authority tenant Shelby Morgan.

"I can't open my mailbox," Morgan said. "I have to actually have to pull back the mailbox just to put my hand inside."

A routine that Morgan and other tenants at the Farragut Houses in Brooklyn have been practicing for close to three months since the locks on their mailboxes broke.

"People are having difficulties getting into their mailbox, so they're finding other ways to try and get their mail," Morgan said.

Despite the fact that many of the mailboxes don't even close, the mail continues to be delivered.

"There's people that could possibly try to take other people's mail," Morgan said.

Morgan said his repeated attempts to get NYCHA to repair the mailboxes failed.

After Morgan contacted NY1 for You, we reached out to NYCHA and the mailboxes were repaired immediately.

"I’m happy that we’re seeing such a quick response to a situation that’s pretty much been going on for a good while," Morgan said. "We thank NY1."
