A dark stretch of street in Morningside Heights had joggers and pedestrians wondering why they were being left in the dark, until NY1 For You shed some light on the situation. NY1 Susan Jhun filed this report.

Out of the darkness and into the light a relief for those walking and running along Morningside Drive.

"I feel a lot better," says resident Max Moyet.

Now that half a dozen lights from a 110th to 113th streets have been turned back on. Last week we told you how those who live and work in the neighborhood were nervous for their safety since the stretch of lights had been out for months.

"It invites people with nefarious intentions," Moyet says. "On top of that, I've seen bicyclists that have raced down here and are unaware of the speed bumps and they get into accidents."

"I usually turn my music down and I sometimes even put my flashlight on," says runner Beth Tipton.

At the time, we contacted The Department of Transportation and found there was an electrical outage in the area. A Con Edison spokesman told us they needed to do work on electrical lines in the street and crews would start soon. Days later the lights were back on.

Now that this stretch is lit, those in the neighborhood say they feel much safer at night.

"I feel safe now going home at this time of night, if we didn't have the lights now we would be in pitch black," says Kimberley Griffin, who works in the neighborhood.

"It took you guys basically taking the initiative to say, 'OK, let's do this. Let's address this right now,'" says Moyet.

It was action that lit the way.
