A serious bump in the road had some Queens residents concerned until NY1 For You got it taken care of. Susan Jhun filed the following NY1 For You report.

A loose manhole cover caught the attention of concerned residents on 121st Street off Atlantic Avenue in the Richmond Hill section of Queens.

"As I parked my vehicle, another vehicle drove up and caught the corner of the manhole, and the rim around it flew up and hit the car that was to the right of it," said resident Jean Guignard.

"They're dangerous for cars, for bicyclists, for pedestrians," said resident Matthew Aronoff. "The fact that they're loose, who knows if they're even going to stay stable."

Those in the area say the broken cover is real threat with a major avenue running nearby.

"I hope they can fix this thing as soon as possible, before somebody actually does get hurt," Guignard said. "Car or a pedestrian. It could be anybody."

Residents say repeated calls to the city did nothing to fix the cover. That's when they reached out to NY1 For You.

We called the Department of Environmental Protection, and the agency came out and fixed the manhole cover. A spokesman told us that the steel ring around the hole that secures it was broken. He said the agency flipped the cover as a safety precaution until it was fixed.

Now, the secured cover is no longer a safety hazard.
