Tenants in a Washington Heights building called NY1 For You after months of living with no gas. NY1's Susan Jhun filed this report.

After three months of living without cooking gas, tenants in this Washington Heights building are fed up.

"When we call the management company their response is we're working on it," says tenant Elisa Read.

But residents at 80 Fort Washington Avenue say they see no evidence of that and in the meantime they're racking up expenses eating out.

"It's $30, $40, $50 a day that we're spending unnecessarily," says Read.

We reached out for comment to New Castle Realty, management for the building, but haven't heard back.

According to HPD records, there are currently 150 open Housing Maintenance Code Violations at this property including violations for a lack of gas. Records also show, that HPD has spent a total of 18 thousand dollars in emergency repair charges on the building.

A spokeswoman from the Housing Preservation and Development told us gas was reportedly shut off by ConEdison in January due to a gas leak and since then the building owner has not taken steps to correct the problem. The spokeswoman went on to say, the issue is now be referred to HPD’s Housing Litigation Division so that a case against the building owner can be pursued in housing court.

Read says she's been in Housing court with New Castle over numerous  other violations including standard housing repairs, no heat and no lights.

"Our responsibility is to pay our rent, which we do. Your responsibility is to keep this apartment up to safety. It's not even luxury; it's safety at this point," Read says.
