Residents are relieved after a road in one Manhattan neighborhood was repaired with the help of NY1 For You. NY1’s Susan Jhun filed this report.

After multiple calls to the city, residents in this Hamilton Heights neighborhood are happy to drive safely on the street again.

“It really wasn't a pothol. It was more like a sinkhole,” says resident Linda Kugel.

Last week, residents contacted NY1 For You concerned about a gaping hole in the middle of the street. They say calls placed to 311 since the winter had gone unanswered.

“It’s dangerous,” one area resident says.

“It’ll mess up a car,” says another.

“We’ve had two blowouts on the block that I know about,” another says.

Drivers and cyclists alike tried their best to avoid the hazard, which they suspect may be a sinkhole. Up close, the hole runs several feet down beneath the surface. After residents contacted us, we reached out to the city.

We contacted The Department of Environmental Protection and they came out immediately to address the situation.

A DEP spokesman said the agency is now investigating how the hole was formed and a crew is working to correct the issue.

Residents are just happy this roadside headache is alleviated.

“I'm happy they're fixing it,” says Kugel.
