Broken mailboxes at one city housing complex are causing a major inconvenience for tenants. NY1’s Susan Jhun filed the following report.

What looks like a whiteboard is actually the boarded up mailboxes of residents at The Marcy Houses in Brooklyn.

“The top from the mailbox, it just totally fell off. Then they came in and saw the piece from the mailbox on the floor and they took it and they took it with them and said they were gonna fix it and they never came back,” said tenant George Santiago.

That was three months ago and tenants say since then it's been an ordeal trying to get their mail.

“It's not fair, elderly people going down to the post office,” said tenant Vermell Mclver.

“We have a lot of elderly people in this building. They cannot make it to the post office to pick up their mail. And when they get over there it’s a big line,” said Santiago.

Residents say the post office has told them if the mailboxes aren't fixed soon their mail will have to be returned to sender.

Tenants contacted NY1 and we called NYCHA. After looking into the situation a spokeswoman said NYCHA apologizes for the inconvenience it's causing residents in the building. She went on to say that NYCHA is working with the development to resolve the issue and a vendor has been selected to install a new mailbox bank and repairs are scheduled to be complete in the next three weeks.

That’s a delivery residents are eager to get.
