The City College of New York and the Fashion Institute of Technology joined in solidarity with protesters at Columbia University.

Students and their supporters came out against the Israel-Hamas war, demanding their schools divest interest in Israel.

“Universities are schools to help students grow and challenge ideas, but recently they have not,” Sara Abdulaziz, a student organizer at Hunter College, said.

Abdulaziz participated in Thursday’s protest at the City College of New York, where organizers began pitching tents before 10 a.m.

Protesters are demanding their schools divest from companies which support Israel and ban all trips to Israel like study-abroad programs.

They also want a statement from the university supporting Palestine.

“Now students are uprising, and now students are leading the movement. Students are leading the revolution. Students are taking the way and holding back their universities,” Abdulaziz said.

Protesters said the Gaza solidarity encampment will stay until their demands are met.

At one point, the students chased off public safety officers after what appeared to bean attempt by officials to remove someone or multiple people from the encampment.

The City College of New York has guidelines for protesting on its campus.

A spokesperson said, in part, “[The City College of New York’s] longstanding position is that any legitimate protest — by any group that is part of our community — must be peaceful, respectful, nonthreatening, and devoid of any hatred or intimidation. It must also not interfere with any activities on campus.”
