"As an apprentice, that is the year that you are trying to prove to the company and prove to yourself that you deserve to be here and that you can do this,” said Zoe Bliss Magnussen, one of the four apprentices at NYC Ballet whose year-long tryout was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

What You Need To Know

  • NYC Ballet is keeping its members busy as it works towards reopening in the fall

  • Dancer Zoe Bliss Magnussen, a high school senior, had her year as an apprentice dancer at NYC Ballet interrupted by the COVID-19 shutdown

  • The Disney+ series "On Pointe" was there to capture the emotional moment Zoe was named an apprentice at NYC Ballet

“And so having that time interrupted when you're kind of just feeling like, 'Okay, I got this,' it's definitely been difficult,” she added.

As a result she's been forced to continue her training throughout this crucial period in her career by herself in her family's apartment.

"Dancing at home on wood floors is definitely a lot harder than dancing on, you know, sprung Marley floors, like we have in the theater and all our studios," she said.

There's been somewhat of a silver lining to come out of all of this, and that is Zoe had her moment in the spotlight on Disney+ with the series "On Pointe."

"That was really cool because they just happened to be there the day that I was given an apprenticeship," she said. "And I'm so lucky that they were there that day, because now I have that moment on film forever. And then also, you know, getting to watch it during COVID when we don't get to be doing what we love every day. That was really amazing."

Asked if the shutdown has made Magnussen question her choices or career journey, she said, "I think actually it's been the opposite. I think really not being given the time to dance and to perform makes you realize how much you love it and how much you need it in your life. And so definitely for me it's not been a question of, should I do this? It's been, 'Oh my gosh, my heart really needs this.' And I cannot wait to get back on stage and be giving 150% every single day."
