CONVERSE, Texas -- No one is injured after a Converse house fire destroyed a large portion of a home.

• Neighbor called 11 shortly before 2 p.m.
• Unclear on what caused the fire
• House sustained significant damage

Converse Fire Chief Luis Valdez said the firefighters searched the property multiple times and didn't find any people inside the home, and said they weren't able to get in contact with the home owners.

A neighbor, who lives in a house directly behind the home that caught on fire, said he got home and thought someone was burning leaves. He said he quickly realized what was happening and called 911 at 1:45 p.m.

"It didn't smell like leaves all of the sudden, so I ran over to the fence and I started yelling 'hello', didn't get any response. I maybe yelled it like 15 times,” said Kevin Duray, the neighbor who reported the fire.

Neighbors were also unsure if the owners were currently living at the home. Right now, it's unclear what started the fire, but the fire department is investigating.

"This was a big fire, this was an extensive fire. The house has sustained significant, significant damage,” said Valdez.

The attic and much of the upstairs was destroyed, but the chief noted that the entire house did not burn to the ground.

“You could hear the fire, you know like the roar of it,” Duray said. “I've never been this close to a really big fire like that.”

Valdez said that in a situation where they can't immediately get in contact with the owners, the fire department will secure the property and make every effort to keep people out of the home while they continue to try and get in touch with the property owners.
