Next to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, a sign on an industrial complex reads "The Hall." The group of buildings are now under renovation and located on Hall Street, but developers say the name encompasses so much more.

"It just so happens we’re on Hall Street, but for us the goal is to get people to come together, to convene, to connect, to collaborate, and that is something you would typically do in a hall," said David Gise, the executive director of The Hall.

The Hall is made up of 10 buildings that spread out over an entire city block. RXR Realty purchased the site in 2016 and is pouring in more than $150 million to revitalize the campus, which will primarily be used as work space with connecting plazas.

"The main street plaza sits in between the buildings and it’s an eclectic mix of buildings," Gise saaid. "So it feels and looks like a European village, where we will have retail on either side, outdoor seating, cool lighting."

It’s an adaptive re-use of the 1898 property that once housed the Mergenthaler Linotype Company, which was one of Brooklyn’s largest employers in the early 20th Century, producing a printing press called linotype.

Developers say they’re preserving some of the building’s historical look with original beams and exposed brick. 100,000-square-feet of retail space is planned for the ground floor. Programming in the plazas will be offered for both tenants and the community.

"We envision doing movie screenings, holiday markets, fashion shows, concerts, a lot of art gallery events," Gise added.

There will also be food. The Wallabout neighborhood, sandwiched between the Brooklyn Navy Yard and residential Fort Greene/Clinton Hill, is a food desert. But The Hall hopes to change that making this a neighborhood within a neighborhood.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by spring of next year.
