A former Binghamton factory is set to be demolished after all, despite the county legislature voting no on the move.

On Wednesday, the county executive declared the Phillips Foundry building on Frederick street a public emergency.

With this designation, the county is permitted to move forward with its original plan.

Those opposing the demolition have been pushing to auction the site or find a local business interested in purchasing it.

Broome County executive Jason Garnar says the whole situation was motivated by political games.

"Shame on every single one of them who decided that doing a political favor for a mayor was more important than protecting the safety of the community we live in," said Jason Garnar, (D) Broome County Executive.

Broome County Legislature Chairman Dan Reynolds issued a statement, saying in part, “while the Legislature agrees that the building is unsafe, what we are unsure of is why the County Executive is just now expressing his concerns on safety. This is nothing more than a ploy to cover for his lack of action since the County took ownership of this property nearly two years ago.”
