New York City Emergency Management is encouraging people to plan ahead for emergencies.

September is National Preparedness month and hurricane season is at its peak.

Herman Schaffer the Assistant Commissioner for Community Outreach says it's important to make a plan.

Families should pick two places to meet, identify exit routes, choose a neighborhood and out of area contact, plan for everybody's needs and stay informed by signing up for Notify NYC.

"If you had to evacuate lets say in a fire for an example, you want to make sure everyone is there. That's two purposes really. You as a family member of someone who you are expecting to find there, you want to see them. But, also you can tell the fire department my family is here or not," Schaffer said.

The agency released a video that highlights the importance of having a plan for people with disabilities.
