NEW YORK - Some lawmakers are calling on the city to create more protected bike lanes.

This comes after a cyclist was killed in Manhattan last week.

The woman was hit by a garbage truck after she was forced to swerve out of a blocked bike lane.

It happened on Friday near Central Park West and 66th Street.

Police say the lane was blocked when a for-hire vehicle pulled out.

The woman suffered trauma and died.

Both drivers remained on the scene, but the garbage truck driver was charged with a DWI.

The city has installed more than 60 miles of protected bike lanes since 2014 when Mayor Bill de Blasio traffic safety initiative, Vision Zero, was implemented.

Bike fatalities have fluctuated since then but have not decreased.
