NEW YORK - A person climbing the base of the Statue of Liberty on Wednesday prompted an evacuation of the popular tourist spot on the Fourth of July.

The NYPD says they are assisting U.S. Park Police to remove the woman from the monument.

Earlier in the day, at least seven people were arrested for hanging a banner around the base of the statue that read "Abolish ICE".

That banner was organized by the group Rise and Resist NYC.

The group says the person who scaled the monument base is not affiliated with them.

Rise and Resist NYC says the banner was in response to the "sentiments of Saturday’s nationwide End Family Separation protests".
