MOUNT AIRY, N.C. – A building that’s been part of the Mount Airy community for almost a century went up in flames Monday morning.

  • Eleven crews were called to the scene.
  • The building is beside the Mount Airy News.
  • No injuries were reported.

Officials say the fire broke out before 5 a.m. at an old rope factory beside the Mount Airy News building.

The building is owned by North State Winery and was mostly used for storage.

Eleven fire departments responded to the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

Officials, however, said air quality is an issue in the area because of the amount of heavy smoke from the fire.

There’s no word yet on what caused the fire.
