The creatures of the sea took over Coney Island for the annual Mermaid Parade.

Colorful floats made their way down Surf Avenue Saturday.

And, of course, people donned their best mermaid and sea-creature costumes.

Organizers say this event celebrates the diversity and creativity of New York and Coney Island.

It was the first time for some New Yorkers.

"I've lived in New York for about four years, and I was finally able to make it down today," said one New Yorker. "It's just like colorful and festive, and I'm like really excited for summer and everything."

The parade has been around since 1983 and is one of the largest annual events in the city.
