He's been called everything from the world's highest-paid napkin artist to the Kim Kardashian of the Napkin Art world.

Illustrator Spencer Ockwell has found fame and fortune in an unlikely place — on the back of little white cocktail napkins.

"It's like being a rock star but there's less people screaming and more people watching quietly as I draw," Ockwell said.

Four years ago, Ockwell was just another artist working in advertising and animation. Hanging out in a Bushwick bar one night he did what comes naturally — draw — using bar napkins as his canvas.

Proud of his little creations, he began sharing them on Instagram.

"Captioned them something like, 'Still killing these napkins, #napkinkilla. And then I was like, 'Oh lightbulb! Hold up!'" Ockwell recalled.

It became a daily routine: Go to the bar after work, sketch on napkins, and post them.

The caricatures are fun but that Napkinkilla hashtag really stood out.

He soon caught the eye of New York Magazine which asked him to document New York Fashion Week.

A social media star was born.

"I'm not the first guy to draw on napkins, but I'm the first one to brand it in a way like this," Ockwell said.

The humor is relateable and shareable like one sketch captioned "The only two things you need in the bathroom", featuring drawings of toilet paper and a cell phone

He's landed gigs at Coachella and the Grammys and drawn for celebrities like Pharrell, NBA star Steph Curry, and rapper Pusha-T.

But Napkinkilla is more than just an illustrator with a clever handle.

"I think it's the personality behind it. Me, being this ridiculous guy with long hair and tattoos and gold teeth," Ockwell said.

Every napkin is an opportunity for Ockwell grow his brand.  He now has more than 20,000 Instagram followers, and a livelihood.

"And if my account ever got hacked or deleted I would cry for years. No I wouldn't because I'm tough," Ockwell joked.

Although Napkinkilla doesn't take himself too seriously, he says he is serious about doodling as a career.

He's coy about specific numbers, but admits he earns six figures a year.

"What I do is still a joke, but the money is real as hell," Ockwell said.
