A man convicted of stabbing two kids inside a Brooklyn elevator, killing one of them, was sentenced Tuesday to 50 years to life in prison.

Daniel St. Hubert was convicted last month of stabbing Prince Joshua Avitto and Mikayla Capers in 2014.

"Sometimes, I try not to remember the bad man, Daniel St. Hubert, and what he did to me and P.J., but every day I must look at my body and see those 16 stab wounds that are there for the rest of my life," Capers said in court Tuesday.

Prosecutors said St. Hubert followed the children into an elevator in the Boulevard Houses and stabbed them multiple times.

Avitto died from his injuries. He was 6 years old.

Capers, who was 7 at the time, was severely injured. She survived her injuries and later testified against St. Hubert.

St. Hubert did not testify at his trial but spoke in court Tuesday. In an often rambling address to the judge, he maintained his innocence.

Witnesses, video surveillance, and cellphone records placed St. Hubert near the crime scene. At the time of the attack, he was on parole after serving five years for nearly strangling his mother.

"I'm innocent!" St. Hubert said at his sentencing. "I never done this, I would never kill two kids."

Before the sentencing, defense attorney Howard Greenberg filed a motion to dismiss the guilty verdict, accusing prosecutor Patrick O'Connor of using "racially charged language" in describing St. Hubert during the trial as a hulking black man. O'Connor, who is African-American, called the complaint insulting.

"The sentence is irrelevant because this verdict must be reversed on appeal," Greenberg said.

The judge called the case an unspeakable tragedy. He said he hopes his words are remembered in 50 years' time if St. Hubert is ever eligible for parole.
