There's an effort underway to help a city nurse obtain a green card before she is possibly deported back to her native country next year.

Petranka Stoeva has been working at Bellevue Hospital trauma center for nearly eight years.

Stoeva lost her job after Immigration and Custom Enforcement officials told her she was was being deported back to Bulgaria.

But her attonrey was able to work with hospital staff and even politicians to help grant her an order of supervision.

"I'm so happy that it's just given me that energy, that strength. Even though it's really stressful, but I love it. I love my Bellevue family," Stoeva said.

"In her case, you know we have a win so far, but it took all of these people working together to make it happen," said Stoeva's attroney, Kate Chaltain.

Stoeva was 23 when she arrived from Bulgaria on a tourist visa. She sought asylum, but was rejected. She stayed anyway.

"I never wanted to be you know like illegal.  I always wanted to get social security and everything and I paid my taxes," Stoeva said.

Stoeva was able to return to work earlier this month.

She will now try to go for her green card before her current order of supervision expires next year.
