DELAND, Fla. -- A 14-year-old boy was hospitalized after being shot in the chest by a 19-year-old cousin at a DeLand home, police said.

Victor L. Franklin Jr. of Orange City is facing a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in the shooting, which happened Sunday night.

According to DeLand Police investigators, the 14-year-old was in a bedroom of a home on the 500 block of West Hubbard Avenue when Franklin Jr. came in, showed off a gun and asked about a glove. Another 16-year-old cousin was in the room at the time, police said.

That's when the gun discharged, and the 14-year-old was shot in the chest. He was taken to Halifax Hospital for treatment.

Franklin Jr. ran away but went to the DeLand Police Department with his parents a short time later. He denies intentionally shooting the 14-year-old.
