AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin's newest skyscraper, "The Independent," is set to take the title of tallest building in Austin Next year.

Sunday was the official "Topping Out" ceremony for the building set to officially finish construction in Spring 2019.

At 685 feet, the $300,000,000 apartment building overshadows the next tallest skyscraper, The Austonion, by 2 feet.

Developers at Aspen Heights said they took their cues from buildings across the world to make something unique to Austin. Aspen Heights CEO Greg Henry said the building should fit right in with the "Keep Austin Weird" culture.

"Since it is the tallest and also it does have a unique design, it's also referred to as the Jenga Building. We're excited about that creativity that expresses Austin as a creative city," said Henry.

The building is only one of many skyscrapers to go up in recent years. New development has begun to change the city in many different ways, most noticeably how it looks.

Photographer Jared Tennant has taken pictures of the city's skyline for eight years. He said the city has changed a lot over that short period of time.

"Frost bank was kind of the icon of the city I feel like, like a beaming light. It's kind of been changed quite a bit you can't always get it from every angle like you used to,” said Tennant.

Tennant sees the new development as a mixed bag. He said it's good for the city and his business, but the act of building can make his job more difficult.

"You have a lot of cranes. You know they're real distracting from the shots," Tennant said. "Some angles you can't get for a couple years until a buildings finished because it's a bunch of cranes and wires in the way."

Not only is The Independent the tallest skyscraper in Austin, it's also the tallest residential tower west of the Mississippi. Prices for apartments range from $400,000 to more than $3.5 million.
