ELMA, N.Y. — Deputies say a man hit by a driver in Elma Saturday night has died, and investigators need the public’s help in identifying him.

Erie County sheriff's deputies say the crash happened just after 10 p.m. on Transit Road near Clinton Street.

A deputy found a man lying unresponsive in the road with a large gash on his head.

Cheektowaga and West Seneca police helped shutdown the area while EMTs loaded him into an ambulance.

The man was pronounced dead at South Buffalo Mercy Hospital.

On Sunday, deputies were out on Transit trying to piece together what happened hours earlier. One man who asked not to be identified says the street is dangerous for pedestrians.

"There's two lanes: two north, two south, and then a turning lane, so you're crossing five lanes of traffic at 45-50 miles an hour. You're traveling quite a few feet per second and all of the sudden before you have time to react, you get hit," he said.

He says the problem is there isn't a sidewalk on one side of Transit.

This is just the latest fatal pedestrian accident in the area in recent weeks. Earlier this month, 41-year-old Jennifer Duffin was struck and killed as she tried to cross Niagara Falls Boulevard—the sixth along that stretch of road in five years.

Authorities say the victim was a black man in his 60s, balding with gray hair, a gray beard and was wearing a t-shirt and jeans when he was hit.

Anyone with information on the victim's identity should call the Sheriff's Office at 716-858-2903.
