The police union is reacting to a judge's decision to throw out a lawsuit that sought to block the release of NYPD body camera videos.

The Patrolmens Benevolent Association sued the mayor and the police commissioner in January.

The union argued that releasing body camera footage violated a state law that bars public release of all police personnel records unless a judge signs off on it.

But in tossing the suit Thursday, the judge said the law doesn't allow third parties like the PBA to challenge decisions over body camera video.

The city says it is pleased with the ruling and plans to continue using the footage as record of an incident and not as review of an officer's performance.

In a statement the PBA called the NYPD's release of body-camera videos "illegal and arbitrary".

It went on to say in part, "The judge left police officers standing alone as perhaps the only group with no remedy for a violation of their legal rights".
