Funeral services were held Friday for the Brooklyn man who was shot and killed by police earlier this month.

Loved ones gathered at St. Anthony's Baptist Church in Crown Heights to say goodbye to Saheed Vassell.

The 34-year-old was shot and killed in Crown Heights back on April 4.

Family members say he suffered from mental illness.

Surveillance video shows Vassell pointing what police thought was a gun at several pedestrians.

Officers opened fire after police say he refused to drop the object.

It was later identified as a piece of welding torch.

Mourners say Vassell's death was unjustified.

"They knew him from being in this community, so for them to do this and not follow proper protocol, this is why we're calling on Schneiderman to investigate this case," said the Rev. Kevin McCall of the National Action Network.

"To say, 'Well, he was pointing something that looked like a gun, why is that relevant to the issue? It isn't," said family attorney Anthony Ricco. "The bottom line is that he didn't have to die. And that's what this case will ultimately bring into question, and we're going to see if we can change the legal standard by which people use violence in this society."

The state attorney general's office opened an independent investigation into Vassell's death.
