NEW YORK - Complaints against the city's police department increased last year for the first time in nearly a decade, according to the Civilian Complaint Review Board.

The board says it received 4,487 misconduct complaints in 2017.

That's a five percent increase from the year before.

The most complaints were made in Brooklyn, with more than 1,400 last year.

Manhattan was second with just over a thousand complaints.

That's followed by the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island.

The board says the reason for the increase is unclear.

It could be based on an rise in misconduct, or a rise in complaint reports.
