SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Ovarian cancer is often known as the silent killer, but one organization in Central New York is making noise to raise awareness.

On Sunday, the foundation 'Hope for Heather' held its annual fashion show and brunch.

Dozens showed up in teal representing the fight again ovarian cancer.

They participated in raffles and activities.

Funds raised from the event go toward ovarian cancer research and helps those battling the disease.

Each year, about 20,000 women are diagnosed with the ovarian cancer. Out of that number, about 15,000 die.

That's why organizers say raising awareness is so necessary.

"It's very important because ovarian cancer has no test, so women need to know the symptoms. They need to know how to speak to their doctor about the symptoms and how to be proactive. By holding awareness events like this, hopefully we can make everyone aware and save lives," said Frieda Weeks, Hope for Heather president.

Hope for Heather began in honor of Heather Weeks, who lost her life to cancer at age 24.

This is the 8th year of the event.
