CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- More calls for gun control came from a rally at UNC-Chapel Hill on Thursday.

Hundreds attended the gun violence rally on Polk Place to hear speeches from students, advocates and elected officials.

Among those that spoke included two survivors of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Florida and a brother of one of the victims of that school.

“I hope that after today people realize that we don’t have to remain quiet,” said UNC freshman Christian Delgado. “That students can have a voice and I want our elected officials to know that just because we are young does not mean they can sweep our voices under the rug and ignore them.”

Others disagree with those at the rally.

Paul Valone of Grass Roots North Carolina said, “It is becoming clear that what is being portrayed as an organic movement of students is actually being orchestrated by a limited number of left-wing activists.”
