Hundreds of mourners gathered Monday in Floral Park on Long Island as the wake continued for fallen city firefighter Michael Davidson, with loved ones recalling his devotion to his young children and the city.

"From day one, he was a rock. He was the real deal," FDNY Captain Daniel Kudla said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and top-ranking FDNY officials joined the hundreds of mourners who waited hours to pay their respects at Davidson's wake Monday, some offering comfort to his wife, who will be caring for the four young children he now leaves behind.

"He was a wonderful dad," FDNY Lt. Greg Damato said about Davidson. "He concentrated on his children, he loved them, he talked about them, he made time for them."

Davidson, 37, was a 15-year veteran of the city fire department.

He was posthumously promoted to lieutenant over the weekend.

Davidson was separated from his team on Thursday after entering a burning building in Harlem.

He was later found unconscious and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The city Medical Examiner said Davidson died from smoke inhalation.

Friends said, as a firefighter, there was no one more dedicated than Davidson. To them, it was no surprise that he would have rushed in to the fire to save lives.

"I just want the city to know, I want this country to know what type of person was lost a few days ago, what they lost, what we all lost," Kudla said.

Loved ones spoke of his kindness and generosity during the first half of his wake Sunday.

"Watching Michael outside with the young children of the neighborhood, he took a special interest in that. He would take the young children, if they come by and needed air in their tires, he'd fill up their tires and send them on their way. He'd put them on the apparatus, on the rig, hit the horn. He just loved people, loved children," said FDNY Captain Robert Allen.

Davidson's funeral will be held Tuesday at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown.
