A hit-and-run alert system, which will operate like the Amber Alert system, officially went into effect Saturday in the city.

Information about the make, model, color, and license plate of the car in question will be sent to New Yorkers in the form of emails, text messages, social media, or other communications within 24 hours of a hit-and-run.

The new system was made with the aim of helping the public report tips to the city police department more quickly.

It was created as part of a law named in honor of DJ Jinx Paul, a radio personality on La Mega 97.9 FM who was killed in a hit-and-run in Brooklyn in 2016.

The alleged driver was arrested in November, almost a year after the crash.
