The improper disposal of a lithium battery caused a massive five-alarm fire at a recycling plant in Queens that led to extensive delays for Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) commuters, the city fire department said Saturday morning.

The flames broke out Friday afternoon at the plant, which recycles mostly newspaper and cardboard products, just east of Jamaica Station.

The fire was not under control until around 8:54 a.m. Saturday, the fire department said.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries due to the fire, with about 200 firefighters responding to the blaze.

Winds up to 25 miles per hour made it difficult for firefighters to get the flames under control.

The FDNY said some of the newspaper and cardboard products were stacked up to 15 feet high.
