SALISBURY, N.C. -- The city of Salisbury had 10 homicides last year, affecting people from every age, even teenagers.

In an effort to combat the crime, the city is taking a new approach. Hoping to influence children at a younger age and stop the violence, they have opened the Miller Teen Recreation Center, focusing on one teen at a time.

“It’s quality over quantity,” says Parks and Recreation Director Nick Aceves. “If we get lost in the weeds of 'we need to help every child' it’s going to be a lost cause.”

The city opened the recreation center with the help of a $50,000 grant from the Robinson foundation.

Teens will receive an ID card once they become a member of the center for free. That card will also double as a bus pass for the year.
